Great player. I watched him play for years on those Chicago Bear teams that didn't have a quarterback worth the name. Bob Avelleni could barely pass the ball past the line of scrimmage and Vince Evans while better wasn't that accurate. The NFL loved to run the ball back then but the bears were pathological about it. From when he was drafted until 1983 or 84 he played on a series of awful teams which almost never passed the ball. The other team always knew what to expect and the Bears always gave the ball to Payton. He carried that load staying healthy despite having over 310 carries a season. He averaged over 20 carries a game during his 190 regular season games. Just an amazing and durable player.
